Present appointment

2005 to present	Professor of Glaciology in the School of Geographical Sciences, University of Bristol. Co-director of the Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM), which is a NERC-funded Earth Observation Centre of Excellence. CPOM research aims to understand processes in the Earth's polar latitudes that may affect the Earth's albedo, polar atmosphere and ocean circulation, and global sea level.

1990 to 1993	Research Fellow in Grant Institute of Geology, University of Edinburgh. EU-funded project on numerical modelling of ice sheet dynamics aimed at understanding the glacial geology of northern Europe. Member of the Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre.
1988 to 1990	Project Engineer, Water Research Centre, Swindon. Hydraulic modelling of sewer, river and dam-break flows. Financial and personnel management of environmental impact assessment projects.

1985 to 1988	Ph.D. in Geography, University of Edinburgh on ‘Modelling former ice sheets’. NERC-funded topic supervised by Prof. David Sugden. Started at the University of Aberdeen and including a nine-month stay at the Department of Meteorology, University of Melbourne.
1981 to 1985	B.Sc. Honours (Class 2.1) in Environmental Science, University of Stirling.
