Dr Tony Hoare

I’ve been on the academic staff of what is now the School of Geographical Sciences at Bristol since 1976, though have spent spells of study leave based at the University of York (Toronto, Canada) and University of Canterbury (Christchurch, New Zealand). Prior to coming to Bristol I was a Lecturer in Geography at Queen’s University, Belfast, and prior to that was both an undergraduate and postgraduate PhD student in the Cambridge University, Geography Department.

As I enjoy and am stimulated by both my research and teaching I try to maintain a balance between the two, and also find some of the management and administration stimulating, if not in the "doing" then certainly in the "outcomes". I have had a number of academic and wider community interests outside the department locally and nationally, which currently involve being a local school governor and the University ‘representative’ on the committee of the Bristol branch of the Geographical Association.
